On November 29th we are collaborating with like-minded groups and individuals to host the Global Climate March – Waterloo Region.  Join people from across the region for this peaceful family-friendly march to send a powerful message of encouragement and hope in support of decisive action at COP21.  We will meet at Waterloo Public Square at 2pm and march to 22 Willow.

Human Rights Film Festival

2015 Human Rights Film Festival Programme is out! 12 Films! 8 Premieres! And 16 countries in focus! It all kicks off on December 10 at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema with the Canadian Premiere of Viko Nikci’s, Coming Home, a documentary about a man who was wrongfully imprisoned for 13 years for a crime he never committed.

Reduce Your Stress To Find Everyday Balance  

When: Every Thursday from 3:30-4:20pmBlog_ReduceStress_Homepage
Location: Counseling Services,  Needles Hall  (new building), Group room

This drop-in program is designed to help you reduce stress and learn ways to find balance and enhance your productivity and well-being. Facilitators will introduce you to a variety of experiential practices each week to help you find relief from stress, These practices will be something you can learn to do yourself to prevent and reduce the negative impact of stress.
Wear comfortable clothing and bring a note pad and pen.

On Tuesday, November 24 from 2 p.m. – 7 p.m., the SLC Multi-Purpose Room will be filled with therapy dogs from St. John’s Ambulance, the Humane Society, Therapeutic Paws of Canada and Autism Service Dogs. Warning: you may fall in love!

Hist 291 – JFK:Decision-maker and Myth

UW History Department will be offering a special topics class on John F. Kennedy: the peacemaker, who successfully traversed some of the most dangerous crises in recorded history, including the October 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

JFK was an anomaly: a warrior in the Second World War whose war experience left him doubting that war had a place in the modern world, especially a world with nuclear weapons. During the Cuban missile crisis, which students will examine in detail, Kennedy found a way to a peaceful resolution to the crisis, even though the majority of his advisers counseled war. Kennedy discovered in the crucible of the crisis that the correct number of nuclear weapons in the world must be zero. As you know, we have a long way to go to achieve Kennedy’s vision, as there are still thousands of nuclear weapons in at least nine countries, many on a hair-trigger alert.

Youth Engagement Worker

Carizon Family and Community Services specializes in children’s mental health, youth engagement and development, family violence services, individual and family counselling, parental support and education, credit counselling, workplace resilience, settlement support and community wellness.
The Youth Engagement Worker within the Erb West neighbourhood works with diverse community stakeholders, coordinating programs within the community, acting as a liaison between partner organizations, the Agency and the community, and promoting youth capacity and leadership development opportunities within the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Promote and support youth capacity and leadership development opportunities within the Community
• Supervise and support volunteers as needed
• Liaise with the Neighbourhood Association, and/or Partner Agencies
• Identify community assets and needs
• Build relationships with community members and support relationships development between community members
• Maintain open communication with community members, volunteers, partners and the community services team
• Support initiatives that are a result of the neighbourhood engagement (events, programs, etc.)
• Recommend and assist in the development of policies and procedures for the community leadership team and support the work of Carizon in other ways as required

EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE:
• Diploma or degree related to youth engagement and community development
• 2-3 years of experience with youth engagement and community building

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to work independently within the community with limited supervision
• Understanding of multiple approaches to youth engagement, participation, and collaboration
• Knowledgeable and experienced in working and communicating with a diverse population
• Excellent communication skills required which include: courtesy, tact, discretion, providing detailed explanations, mediation or guiding, problem solving interpretation, negotiation, counselling and diplomacy
• Ability to interact effectively with external stakeholders such as community partners, program funders and other clients
• Ability to manage time pressures; deal with lack of control over outcomes and set boundaries with community members
• Sensitive to complex experiences of participating communities

Promise Partnership Counsellor

Carizon Family and Community Services specializes in children’s mental health, youth engagement and development, family violence services, individual and family counselling, parental support and education, credit counselling, workplace resilience, settlement support and community wellness.
As part of a team of clinical, research, and community partners, the Promise of Partnership Counsellor will provide psycho-educational groups, case management, crisis intervention, advocacy and education to Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) and Privately-Sponsored Refugees (PSRs) and contribute to the ongoing development of the Promise of Partnership project. In addition to providing these direct services to clients, the position involves collaborative team work, and community capacity building through engaging with local service providers to improve the alignment of mental health services to GARs and PSRs in the Waterloo Region. Individuals and families supported by this position gain the insights, information, tools and skills necessary for navigating the community and mental health services systems within Waterloo Region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintain knowledge of current best practices in serving refugees, to ensure that the project activities remain responsive to the needs of clients and community partners.
• Active involvement in training, outreach, and community capacity building activities to enhance the local response to the mental health needs of refugees.
• Work closely with staff from Reception House, providing consultation and training as required.
• Refer clients to other community agencies and professionals to increase the support and services needed by the client.
• Accept group referrals and engage clients in appropriate and meaningful intervention in order to facilitate effective therapeutic change.
• Advocate on behalf of the client as well as provide information on services at the agency and other community resources as appropriate.
• Work as a team with community social services agencies as appropriate.
• Maintain and promote on-going professional development to enhance counselling skills and participate in regular peer supervision sessions.
• Adhere to the ethical standards of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and in particular maintain confidentiality with respect to client matters.
• Develop and facilitate group sessions, identify needs for new programs and design and deliver such programs.
• Stay current on program development and design practices to ensure consistent high quality service delivery.
• Participate in internal and community committees as assigned.
• Demonstrate flexibility in responding to clients needs and work through workforce planning and staffing as required.
• Support the Outcomes Evaluations program and requirements for continuous quality improvement.
• Identify trends and issues presented by clients and keep the Community Services Clinical Manager informed of such trends and issues.
• Promote a positive and professional image of Carizon.
• Complete all required documenation in a professional and timely manner.
• Participate in client and program evaluations as required.
• Represent the agency and maintain professional relationships with community agencies and clients, providing expertise in the field of counselling.
• Supervise student interns from MSW university programs as required.

REQUIRED CREDENTIALS:
• Bachelors Degree or greater in Social Work, or related Human Services field.
• Minimum 5 years post-graduate experience.
• Candidates should possess an extensive knowledge of issues associated with Government Assisted Refugees and Personally Sponsored Refugees and the systemic barriers refugees confront on a daily basis.
• Multilingual – Arabic and Somali languages preferred.
• Previous experience working with refugees.
• Exemplary skills in group facilitation, crisis intervention, advocacy.
• Strong clinical skills and knowledge of violence and trauma counselling an asset.
• Ability to manage time and quality pressures in a fast paced work environment and instances of unpleasant client interaction.
• Self -motivated, committed, very organized and sensitive to the needs of clients.
• This position requires a high level of confidentiality for the protection of the client.
